Week 7 Recap – 5.14.16

The Cannons have done it again! – this time in Sudden Death Double Overtime topping the Raleigh Flyers (25-24)! The atmosphere Saturday night was downright electric. The weather was perfect for a night of Ultimate; and the stands filled with rowdy Cannons fans.

Without number two deep threat, Travis Catron, everyone on the offensive line knew they had to elevate to the occasion. However, the addition of college phenom Bobby Ley certainly bolstered the handler core. Down a cutter and up a thrower, the Cannons offense looked a bit different Saturday night. Big hucks still went up (and got ripped out of the sky), but disc movement and flow was the best it’s been all year. Throughout the game, there were six lead changes, with neither team seeing a lead greater than two.

At the end of the first quarter the game was knotted at 6. The second quarter, one of the lowest scoring quarters to date, ended with a Cannon’s layout buzzer beater grab off the Raleigh deflection by Chris Gibson to go ahead 9-8 at half. In the third quarter, Raleigh was able to get the break back, leaving the game tied once again, at 15 this time. With only 50 seconds left in the game, the Cannons were up 21-20 with possession. A deep shot gone awry gave the Flyers hope. A quick strike and the game was tied again, for the nineteenth time, at 21 all.

After a Cannons turnover, Raleigh looked to put it away on the goal line, but a huge layout D by none other than Mischa Freystaetter saved the game, forcing overtime! In OT the Cannons jumped out to a two point lead, but Raleigh clawed back after Cannons’ careless errors, forcing a second, sudden death overtime. A half field hammer from Cole to Mischa put the final nail in the coffin, 25-24, Cannons win! Three straight home wins has put the Cannons in prime playoff position, nearly halfway through the season.

The Atlanta Hustle come to town next Saturday at 7 PM and the Cannons will look to get above .500 for the first time this season. Come join us next Saturday 7 PM at Bolles for another thriller! BOOM
