Week 12 Recap – 6.18.16

The Cannons snap a three game skid in dramatic fashion; by staging an epic comeback in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter to force overtime. Despite leading by one for most of the first three quarters, the Cannons found themselves down 19-15 with only minutes left on the clock. Scrappy Charlotte defense dissembled a previously consistent Cannons offensive line, causing a meltdown of mass proportions. 19-15 with only a few minutes left in a must win game… is the season really going to end like this, at home?

At that moment acting Head Coach Beth Vavrica made the gutsiest call of the season: take the starting offense out and put a defensive line in on offense to shake things up. Mind you, that means the AUDL’s top goal scorer and #2 and #3 assist leaders were on the sideline. Coach Vavrica made the right call – the defense converted, not once, but four times in a row to tie the game and force overtime. In overtime, it was all Cannons. Charlotte won the coin flip and elected to receive, but aggressive Cannons defense led to a turn and a quick score. One more would seal the deal at 21-19, preserving the Cannons playoff hopes.

As usual the Cannons defense came alive in the second half, but on this night the Legion of Boom carried the team to victory. This coming week the Cannons host the Austin Sol, looking to even the season series after dropping a tough Sunday road game in Austin earlier this season. The winner of this game could very well secure the final playoff spot in the AUDL South. Come out to Bolles at 7 PM and cheer your Cannons on to victory! BOOM!
