Jax Sweep Carolina

Cannons sweep North Carolina road trip in dramatic fashion: What a thrill the weekend was! Two games, one decided by one point, one decided in extra time. The Charlotte Express played their hearts out, as usual, in the first of our weekend battles. Their “never say die” attitude ensures each point is played as if it were their last, regardless of a ten point or one point spread.
With our playoff hopes dangling by a thread, much earlier in the weekend than we suspected, our Cannons stepped up to the plate to close this one out strong with a final score of 18-17. Not a day later, we found ourselves in another dogfight against a strong Raleigh squad. End of the first quarter: 10-10. Halftime: 16-16. End of third quarter: 21-21. End of regulation: 25-25. The sun beat down aggressively, yielding temperatures near the 100 degree mark. But that didn’t stop either team from coming out in a blaze. A combined 20 points were scored in just the 1st quarter.
As the game went on, both teams tightened up defensively. That didn’t prevent either offensive line from scoring, but rather increased the effort the respective opponent had to put in. Through four quarters, both teams were up for the challenge. The 4th quarter ended in dramatic fashion, with the Cannons tying the game with :18 on the clock, plenty of time for Raleigh to strike. With seconds left, Raleigh put up a big hammer – incomplete! We are going to overtime! In extra time the Cannons came out firing, in the truest sense. We rattled off 3 quick points with some stellar defense and subsequent conversions, which proved to be enough to take home the 28-26 overtime victory.
Now we are in control of our playoff destiny. We host Atlanta at home this weekend at Stanton College Prep – a MUST WIN game (they all are wink emoticon. Then we visit Atlanta for the ESPN3 Game of the Week on July 4! And you know what happens on July 4th… BOOOOOOOOOOM!!!
